Should Handhelds Also Be Phones??
  We’re super excited about the upcoming release of the Nintendo 3DS - GameSta has been shaking so much with anticipation he keeps spilling his drink all over his lap. So yes, it constantly looks like GameSta has wet his pants... thanks a lot Nintendo! But the 3DS isn’t the only exciting news for the handheld world, with Sony also expected to release a PSP 2 before Christmas 2011. While little is known about this device, leaked images suggest that it has amazing power - as good as the Xbox 360, wow! - a touchpad on the back where your fingers sit and two analogue sticks instead of one.
Now that might all sound super cool, but what about the iPhone? This amazing device from Apple has also been getting some pretty rad games of late. Check out list on the next page to see for yourself what kind of cool titles are coming out: sure, they’re not nearly as amazing as a New Super Mario Bros. or LittleBigPlanet, but they’re still lots of fun. Plus, the iPhone has the added benefit that you can use it to make phone calls and check your email.
Now we don’t know how big the pockets on your pants are, and maybe it is because we’ve eaten too many party pies... with sauce... but we can only fit one device in our shorts. Not a console handheld and a mobile. It makes you wonder if the Nintendo 3DS and the PSP 2 should also work as a phone.
We think they should. While iPhone games at the moment aren’t nearly as good as the titles on the 3DS and PSP 2, it certainly is handy to be able to have the Internet, music, photos, videos and games all in the one place. It would be a lot harder for Nintendo to turn their handheld into a phone than Sony, as the maker of the PSP already makes mobile phones with the company Ericsson. So maybe, just maybe, Sony already has plans to do it in their upcoming handheld. We’ll find out more on that later. But perhaps Nintendo can look at a different method of being a ‘phone’
The Nintendo 3DS has Wi-Fi built in, so it can connect to the Internet. So why not include a program like MSN or Skype that allows gamers to call each other just like they would with a phone? That way not only will you get the best video games in the handheld land, but you won’t have to try and squeeze a bulky phone into the same pocket. Which means we can keep eating party pies! C’mon Nintendo - do it!		  
Does Practice Make Perfect Online?
 
We’re sure you’ve heard the saying before: practice makes perfect. Maybe from your parents, or your teacher, or your sporting coach. They keep telling you do simple and often super boring things over and over again until you want to throw up. But nobody wants to see what you had for breakfast, so you hold it in and practice, practice, practice.
But gaming is different right? You have stacks of lives and it’s not actually happening in real-life so you can just guess your way to victory. You don’t really have to practice, do you?
Well it turns out that in multiplayer gaming, practice is essential. If you have ever gone online with a game, be it a shooter or racer or anything, you’ve probably been frustrated by how quickly you die. Unlike a normal single player game, online there are thousands of other players battling away to beat you and if they know the game better than you, sometimes it feels like they are invincible. Practice is essential!
We’ve spoken to a number of professional gamers over the years and they all talk about how important it is to learn the tricks of each map and weapon when playing online. They will go into maps when there is nobody else there and explore all the nooks and crannies. They will memorise exactly where the best weapons are, or the health spots. They will try and find little hidey places where they can get a good line-of-sight on their enemies. They will even work out which weapons are the most effective on a map, depending on how it is built.
With all this knowledge in the bank, they can then head online with a lot more confidence. You can do the same. But the practice doesn’t stop there: once you are playing with actual humans you need to watch how they play the game. Where do your enemies like to hide and shoot from? What weapons do they like using? Have they discovered any tricks that you don’t know about? Get all this information and add it to your practice regime until you get better and better.
So yes, practice certainly does make perfect when playing games online. However, it is much more fun than practicing your times table, or your dribbling skills, isn’t it?

This awesomely cute game has you trying to fling little birds across the screen so they collect objects and solve level puzzles. It starts off simple enough, but gets super challenging quickly. This is one of the most popular games in the world. ($1.19)

Fruit Ninja

This simple game takes two really rad things - succulent fruit and ninjas - and throws them into the one game. Using your finger as a sword you need to slice through fruit as it is thrown up in front of you. However, things like bombs and the need to nail combos make it interesting. ($1.19)

Flick Kick Football

This sweet soccer game turns your finger into a foot, and asks you to take free kicks. The way you move your finger on the screen adds speed and curve. This comes in handy, because as you progress more obstacles are put between you and the goal. ($1.19)

Game Dev Story

Ever wanted to know what it is like to run a video game studio? This amazingly addictive game simulates it, requiring you to manage your team, come up with some creative ideas and then release a title to see how it sells and reviews. ($4.99)

Doodle Jump

This vertical platformer tasks you with climbing up as high as you can in a world filled with power-ups and changing platform. Plus as you go, the numbers of obstacles and baddies increase to make it harder and harder the higher you get. ($1.19)

Archetype

Not interested in a quirky puzzle games? This is an online deathmatch first-person shooter. It controls well, has amazing graphics and plays like big name games such as Halo. The only puzzle is working out who to shoot first. ($1.19)

Cut the Rope

You need to get a shiny ball hanging from the end of a rope into the mouth of a frog, while picking up as many stars as possible. As you cut the rope with your finger it causes the ball to swing. It gets super challenging when there are multiple ropes, power-ups and stars. ($1.19)

Plants vs. Zombies

This massively popular game has you defending your land against incoming zombies by placing plants about your yard. As the zombies start pouring in, you’ll need to think quickly and use a lot strategy. ($3.99)

Flight Control

This gets its first tick for being made in Australia, then its second for being addictive. You are in control of an airport, using the touchscreen to draw landing patterns and pathways for incoming planes. ($1.19)

iNethack

This free old-school dungeons & dragons game does away with fancy graphics to focus on randomly generated dungeons and stacks of ways to build your inventory and combat enemies. It takes a while to learn all the symbols, but the effort is worth it. (Free)

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

Format: 360, PS3
You know, we’re kind of angry with our parents. Why didn’t they put us in ninja school when we were really young instead of super lame normal school with dumb maths? Seriously, we could have all been cool fighting machines like Naruto by now. Oh well, it looks like we’ll have to live out our Ninja fantasies in the games from the spunky young dude with a love of orange trackies instead. Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 isn’t to be confused with some of the recent Naruto RPGs like The Broken Bond, as it is instead a straight out fighter, just like the original. The action takes fans back to the very start of the Shippuden storyline, with Naruto arriving in Hidden Leaf village. The game then takes you all the way through the series. You’ll play out all the major plot points – including one memorable fight with Pain – finishing up with the devastating attack on the village itself. This is a fighting game first and foremost and it offers some of the most exciting combat we’ve ever seen from the genre. It’s also like nothing else. Fights unfolds in these massive open environments and the battlefield changes underneath you as you go. The boss battles in particular are fantastic: they last for ages, have dramatic changes to the combat arena and feature quick event button cutscenes that make you feel like you’re controlling a cartoon. Fans of the previous game will fall straight into the action without too much stress as most of the features remain intact and the controls are more-or-less unchanged. There are 60 fighters to test out and 23 destructible environments to duke it out in: supporting characters also return. There is a new Drive Gauge, however, that builds up and allows you to unleash devastating combination attacks with your supporting character. It looks amazing.

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction

Format: PS3, PS2, PSP, 360, DS
Boy, would we love to have our own Omnitrix: imagine being able to transform yourself into a wicked alien and getting all their super powers. Ben Tennyson doesn’t know how luck he is! Actually, wait a tic… hold your horse… close the gate. You can have your own Omnotrix: you just need to get your hands on this wicked Ben 10 game and you can turn yourself into more alien forms that you can poke a stick at! Cosmic Destruction is the fifth Ben 10 video game and it is based off of the Ben 10: Ultimate Alien TV series. If you’re a huge fan of the show – and who isn’t? – you’ll know that this is the third version of the Ben 10 series which has our hero saving the Earth as an older sixteen-year-old. In fact the game has Ben 10 hunting across real world locations like Tokyo, Paris China and Rome in the search for Galvan artefacts that can prevent our bright blue planet from destruction. You’ll also know that the Omnitrix has been destroyed. *Gasp!* Never fear however, Ben 10 has a new gauntlet-like device called the Ultimatrix that is even better. In fact, as the name implies, this device allows Ben 10 to transform into the much more powerful Ultimate Aliens and gives him access to all their powers. These guys are hyper-evolved and super cool. Although don’t worry, he can still transform into the older alien forms you’ll remember from previous games. All up there is a whopping 16 alien forms to transform into over the course of the game including newcomers like Armodrillo, WaterHazard, AmpFibian, Terraspin and NRG.

FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010

Format: PS3, Wii, 360, PSP
So here are some facts: the FIFA 10 game is the greatest soccer game ever made and the World Cup is the greatest sports event in the entire world. So what happens when you get the two together? Double the awesome! This game is built off of the same engine as the brilliant game of last year, with tweaks to the penalty shootout and a more accurate player fatigue. The game obviously focuses on the World Cup, with you able to choose from 199 countries and then take them all the way through to glory either offline or online. There is also a Captain your Country mode, where you get to play one single player on the park and experience the action from the third-person. You can even import your Virtual Pro from FIFA 10 if you have one so you can continue to work on their stats. Finally, the 10 stadiums from the World Cup have all been remodelled and stuck in the game. When you consider how awesome the graphics and controls already were, and add in these cool features, this is one must own for soccer fans.

SKATE 3

Format: PS3, Wii, 360, PSP
There is only one good way to enjoy the thrills of grinding epic rails and busting huge ollies off rooftops without the risk of snapping your head in half and that is in the SKATE games. The first two were epically awesome with super graphics and the best controls ever. SKATE 3 amps it up to the next level! The action takes place in the all new town of Port Carverton where skateboarding is not a crime. So instead of people getting in your way or chasing you down they’ll actually be showing you cool spots and cheering you on – we like that! The big new feature is the Create-A-Park mode where you can totally build your very own skate park which you and your friends can try out online. In fact, the game encourages you to do a lot more skating around with your friends, with you able to form a gang of sorts and cruse around the world challenging other people. You goal is to build a company and to advertise it to the world through the way you skate – that means creating your own graphics and accessories. Yes skate fans: this game is sweet!

ModNation Racers

Format: PS3
We’re extremely excited about this game. It basically takes the awesome create-your-own-level craziness of LittleBigPlanet and matches it with the zaniness of Mario Kart. At its core it follows many of the gameplay traits that fans of Kart racers will know and love: you line-up on the grid with a cast of funny lookin’ characters and race around stunt-filled tracks. You can jump and do big drifts which earns you boost power and the track is filled with weapons (which can be levelled-up) that allow you to use tactics other than a good passing move to get to the front. There is a full single player story mode to enjoy, as well as split-screen and 12-player online multiplayer as well. Now here’s the good bit. There is a full track creation editor which allows you to build your own tracks and it is extremely flexible. It is perfectly designed so that even if you couldn’t create your own mud you can still build an awesome track in minutes. We created a version of Bathurst from the V8 Supercars in about 20 minutes. You can then swap these tracks online, download your friend’s circuits and race on them. Awesome!

Sonic the Hedgehog 1

Debug Mode.
When you are at the title screen press A, A, Up, Down, Left, Right and wait till you hear a ring chime. Then hold the Y button while pressing start. Now when you play the game you will be able to press B to drop objects into the world whenever you want.

Level Select.
When you are at the title screen press; up, down, left, right. Wait for the ring chime and then hold Y as you press start. You can now choose which level you want to play.

Different Ending.
If you collect all the Chaos Emeralds before you finish the game you will get a different ending.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Level Select.
Go to the title screen and press; Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right and wait for the ring chime. Now hold A as you press start and you should be able to choose which level you want to play.

Change Tails’ Name.
When you are at the title screen, press; up, up, up, down, down, down and up. This will change Tails’s name to Miles.

Slow Motion.
After you have entered the level select code, start a game in any level. While playing hit the pause button, then hold down B and try and play. As long as you are holding down B the game will play in slow motion.

Start with 14 Continues.
Before you play the game, go to Sound Test and play the following songs in order: 19, 65, 09, 17, 01, 01, 02, 04. Now when you play the game you should have 14 continues.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Level Select.
Just as the “SEGA” screen fades as the game is loading up, press the following quickly: up, up, down, down, up, up, up, up. This will unlock the Sound Test in the main menu. Head here and play the following songs in order: 19, 65, 09 and 17. Now hold A as you press start to begin your game.

100,000 Points.
If you can finish a stage exactly when you time hits 9:59 you will get a bonus of 100,000 points.

Control Tails in Single Player.
If you are playing a one-player game with Sonic and Tails, insert a second controller and you can take over Tails and let Sonic follow.

Hidden Special Stage
Head to the Level Select menu and play the following sounds in order; 01, 03, 05, 07. Now highlight Special Stage 2 and hold A the same time you press Start.

Sonic and Knuckles

Level Select.
While you are in the first zone of Mushroom Hill look for one of the lifts (you need to press down on them). Jump on it and press: left, left, left, right, right, right, up, up, up. You will hear a ring chime to confirm it worked. Now you just need to die until you get a game over, and when the game restarts at the title screen hold Y as you press start. You will now be able to select which level you want.

Special Stages.
First enter in the Level Select code and then get to the level select menu and change the sound test to 07. Once you have done this, hold A while pressing start on either Special Stage 1 or Special Stage 2. This will grant you access to two different Special Stage 3s.

When in free flight mode you can collect I Symbols: at the following milestones the features will become unlocked:

50: Fireworks will light up the island at night!
60: Allows you to fly a two-seater plane!
70: The Whale Shark has your Mii on the side
80: A vacation house has been built for you

Mix up the Events.
When you are about to select your Mii before an event starts hold down the ‘2’ button. When the event loads it will be different to usual in the following ways, depending on the event:
Airs Sports Island Flyover: Eliminate all balloons and i-Points
Air Sports Skydiving: Play the intro Skydiving event
Archery: No more aiming circle
Basketball Pickup Game: Play at night
Frisbee Golf: No information up on the screen to make it harder.
Golf: No information up on the screen to make it harder.
Swordplay Duel: Play in the evening
Table Tennis Match: Play a 11-point match, which is much quicker.

How Do I Unlock…?
Swordplay Duel Upgrades: At a score of 1000 you will unlock Samurai Armour. At a score of 1500 you will be able to fight the champion. If you win, you can hold ‘1’ when you select your Mii to unlock a special sword.
Swordplay Showdown Reverse Mode: Beat the Volcano Round.
Additional Wakeboarding Levels: Score 400-500 to unlock Intermediate level and get 800-900 to unlock Expert.
Three Holes - Special Course: You need to get under par on every single course to unlock the special course in golf (and you can do it again in Frisbee golf)
