Feline Favours Fruit
When Becky Page, rescued a two-year-old cat on the brink of starvation she was fascinated by the feline’s food cravings. The cat, named Dante, is vegetarian and delights in regular favourites of melon, banana, broccoli, rhubarb, asparagus and even Brussels sprouts. Becky claims as a kitten, Dante would turn his nose up at anything other than organic fruit and vegetables and she "tried feeding him meat, fish, everything else cats like, but he turned his nose up…when I thought nothing would work, he wolfed down a plate of veg I was going to throw out.” Becky recalls she had to trick Dante to ensure he received essential nutrients such as sneaking bits of meat among his vegetarian meals. Although, it’s an unusual diet, Becky assures Dante is a healthy cat but Maggie Smith, director of veterinary services at Cats Protection reports the case is very rare and cats “cannot be vegetarian.”
A Hairy Model
A hairdresser in China has given new meaning to hair styling after creating a highly detailed model of a Beijing model out of hair he collected from his shop. After working on the hair model for five months, Huang Xin revealed his replica of Tian'anmen Gate Tower in Tian'anmen Square made completely from human hair. Xin, who has been a hairdresser for over ten years, claims he only used women’s hair as it was softer to make the model which measured 86 centimetres long, 32 centimetres wide and 60 centimetres high. Once Xin washed and dried the hair, he glued it onto paper and rolled it into various shapes to create the hair tower. But, it isn’t Xin’s only hair-made sculpture; he has also made toys and a model of the famous Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Bejing from the hair of his clients.
Raspberry Flavoured Milky Way
A giant dust cloud at the heart of the Milky Way is being tested by group of astronomers who say it might taste like raspberries. The scientists who are from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn were reportedly looking for evidence of amino acids but failed to find any. Instead, they discovered ethyl formate which is the chemical responsible for the flavour of raspberries. The team of scientists used a telescope in Spain called the IRAM to analyse electromagnetic radiation given off by a hot and dense region of Sagittarius B2 which surrounds a newborn star. During the data investigation from the cloud, the team not only discovered ethyl formate but evidence of the deadly chemical propyl cyanide. One of the astronomer’s, Arnaud Belloche, said "It does happen to give raspberries their flavour, but there are many other molecules that are needed to make space raspberries."
Seasick Fish
A German Zoologist claims he has proof that fish can become ‘seasick’. Dr Reinhold Hilbig set up an experiment to study the effects of weightlessness in water as part of an investigation into how humans are affected in space. Dr Hilbig put forty-nine fish in a mini aquarium and sent them on a plane ride that went into a steep dive to simulate the loss of gravity similar to what astronauts experience during a space flight. The results revealed eight of the fish began turning around in circles and, according to the German scientist, “lost their sense of balance, behaving like humans who get seasick. The fish… became completely confused and looked as if they were about to vomit.” Dr Hilbig further predicts “loss of eye contact with water movement and vibrations plays a large part in their disorientation." Poor dizzy fishes!
Chocolate Powered Car
Car designers are working on the world’s first environmentally-friendly racing car which will be made of vegetables and powered by chocolate. The ecoF3, will be the first Formula 3 racing car created from sustainable and renewable materials featuring a steering wheel made of carrots, a body made of potatoes and a seat made from soybeans. The car is powered with plant-oil based lubricants and a biodiesel engine capable of running on vegetable oil and chocolate. The vegetable fibres are combined with resins to produce the car parts and oils in the chocolate are refined to produce fuel. The WorldFirst team and designers want the technology to be adopted by Formula 1 teams and hope racing chiefs will change the rules so the ecoF3 can compete in upcoming races. Currently, the engine does not meet regulations given its unusual fuel with one spokesman anticipating "Formula 1 teams will see that an environmentally friendly car is not necessarily a slow car.” They will just have to be careful not to eat it!
Man Grows Lung Tree
Trees are a great part of nature, but not when one is growing inside you. Surgeons were shocked when they discovered and removed a two inch long fir tree from a 28-year-old patient’s lung. It was originally thought Artyom Sidorkin, was suffering from cancer. However, when Artyom went into surgery to remove the suspected tumour, doctors located a perfectly formed tree living inside his lung. The stunned surgeons at Izhevsk Hospital in Russia believe Artyom may have breathed in a tiny seed which eventually started growing in his lung. Apart from some symptoms including sharp chest pains, Artyom explained "it was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me."
Newspapers and Shark
Authorities were amazed when they heard reports that a live shark had been dumped outside a newsagency in Warrnambool, Victoria. A passer by of the shark outside the shop alerted police who were at first unsure if the two foot and four inch long shark was still alive. Constable Jarrod Dwyer stated “We arrived and poured some water on it just to see if it was still breathing and it kicked around for a little while." Identified as a Port Jackson shark, it was eventually taken to the town’s breakwater in a bucket of water and then released into the sea. Apart from two venomous dorsal spines, the Port Jackson shark is relatively harmless to humans but the bizarre mystery of the shark on the doorstep of the newsagency has still dumbfounded both the shop owner and police.
Ancient Abseiler
A Gloucestershire man has been entered into record books as Britain’s oldest abseiler. Les Pugh may be 93-years-old but that didn’t stop him from descending almost 50 metres from an office block roof and raising approximately $30,000 for two charities in the meantime. Hundreds of supporters cheered Pugh on as he came down the side of the Eagle Tower in Cheltenham. Pugh recalled the experience just as "wonderful as I thought it was going to be. I didn't feel any nerves while I was up there - I'm completely impervious to heights.” The event saw a number of people abseiling from the building including two nine-year-old girls. Pugh was also deemed the best dressed on the day in a scruffy tweed jacket, shirt and tie.
Dough in Dough
A man from Newcastle in England found a pleasant surprise whilst preparing his breakfast one morning. Thomas Webb was about to chow down on his breakfast toast when he discovered a ten pound note (about twenty dollars) in between two slices of the bread loaf. The 27-year-old IT manager initially thought it to be an office prank by his work colleagues; however, they denied the accusation. Webb stated the incident was "really odd - I'd have thought the bread was made by a machine." After contacting the store where Webb purchased the bread, a shop spokesperson said “there is not much we can do - other than say congratulations." If only we all got paid for eating breakfast!
Snail Snacking Granny
A grandmother from Wales has resolved her situation of snails taking over her garden by eating them. Oriole Parker-Rhodes refused to tread on or poison the hundreds of slimy snails occupying her garden and eating her home-grown potatoes. Now, the 59-year-old frequently feasts on their meat which she states is higher in protein and lower in fat than beef. Miss Parker-Rhodes told a newspaper she is "an organic, perma-culture sort of person and didn't want to trample or poison them. That would be against my principles. So I thought eating them made sense." According to the snail eating Granny, restaurants serve about six snails on a plate; yet, she serves twelve on a plate along with salad, garlic, parsley or butter sauce and bread. Parker-Rhodes is so passionate about her snail diet that she has even set up an internet blog with other recipes. We recommend you don’t try eating snails at home! |
