This is one of the most awesome mobile games we’ve come across in a long time. Not only does it star the one and only Batman, but you can play with all his cool tech while completing story missions and minigames. Plus, it all happens in augmented reality! That’s where you look at your phone or tablet’s screen and see parts of the game appearing in the real world.

And did we mention it’s free. Like totally free – you don’t need to buy DLC to get access to the content. But wait, we’re getting a head of ourselves. So, what’s DC: Batman Bat-Tech Edition all about?

As you know, Batman is out to stop crime going down in Gotham City. However, he can’t be everywhere at once. To get help, he has reached out to kids to be involved in a new program called the Knightwatch.

Knightwatch Missions

When you join the Knightwatch, you will be able to project the city streets of Gotham City into the real world. If you spot a crime, you can jump into action, solving the clues and tracking down the bad guys. The bad guys including familiar faces like The Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman, Penguin and Mr. Freeze.

To do this, you need to master Batman’s technology. There are 10 missions at launch, and each takes around 15 to 20 minutes to complete. What can happen in those missions changes depending on where you are, too, so they’re replayable.

They’re lots of fun. Often, they involve getting up and physically moving around the streets of Gotham City, peering around walls and buildings. And they always have you using Batman’s cool technology to progress.

Using Bat-Tech

Speaking of Batman’s tech, it’s really neat how it is incorporated into the game. Before you jump into the missions, you can bring tech like the Batarang, Batmobile and Cowl into your room. You can walk around it to examine all its parts, then press on certain sections to learn stacks of great info about how it all works. Then, when you get in the game, you can activate that technology to use it for real.

Outside of the missions, there’s a bunch of minigames to play. These are normal games – not augmented reality. But they all tie-in to Batman’s tech and have you trying to beat your own score to gain XP, allowing to level-up and unlock more parts of the app. In one you’re using the Batarang to hit targets, in another you’re driving the Batmobile along an endless road full of obstacles; yet another uses his different vision modes to spot criminals in an environment. They’re all surprisingly addictive and we found ourselves playing them a lot.

Did You Know? September 18 is Batman Day! Make sure you load up the game to join in the celebration.

Bonus Media

If that was all there was in this app, it would already be awesome. But there’s two photo modes, too. One uses augmented reality to place masks and hats on your face, so it looks like you’re in fancy dress-up. Another allows you to add a whole bunch of DC stickers to your photos.

There’s also six new comics you can read, which explain the backstory to the Knightwatch. They look great on the screen of your mobile and tablet. And finally, you can watch videos straight from the DC Kids YouTube channel directly through the app. So, there’s endless entertainment really.

We told you it was one of the best mobile games we’ve seen in a long time. Go and download it now!
