Tech Head – March 2023

Wacom Cintiq Pro 27
This is the ultimate digital product for artists. The huge rotatable screen offers a 4K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and incredible colour accuracy. Unlike earlier drawing tablets, the software is visible on the multitouch screen, so you’re looking at what you’re drawing, and can manipulate all the tools. The new customisable Pro Pen 3 has a very accurate pressure sensor, making drawing fun and easy. It’s super expensive, but if you plan a future in digital content, this is what you need.

PSVR 2

It’s not very often we get a big new hardware release to celebrate in gaming, but we do this month. The next generation of virtual reality gaming has landed and it works exclusively with the PS5 console. As you can see from its colouring and design, it fits right into that ecosystem. But more importantly, it uses the extreme power of the PS5 to massively improve the console VR experience.
You can expect over double the resolution over the original PSVR, with a 4000 x 2040px OLED display. The all-important field-of-view has increased to 110-degreees. In now has 4 on-board tracking cameras, so you don’t need the camera accessory. Plus, it uses the new PlayStation Sense controllers. On top of that, you can expect a lot less cables.
The coolest features, however, is the Haptic Feedback in the headset, which allows you to feel things as much as see them. The Haptic Feedback is also in the controllers, as is finger-tracking and adaptive triggers. We also get eye-tracking support, as well as something called foveated rendering, which greatly improves the performance of games.
So, it’s pretty awesome. And there’s a decent batch of launch games to dive into, led by the fantastic Horizon: Call of the Mountain. The one big problem, of course, is the price. It’s not cheap at $879.95, that’s for sure. Especially if you need to still buy a PS5 console to go with it. The good news is, it’s the best VR experience you can get, and still a lot cheaper than buying premium PC headsets like the Valve Index or HTC Vive Pro 2.

Surface Laptop 5
There’s plenty to love about this laptop, as long as it’s mostly used for school. It’s got a premium design and feel to it, but is still very light and easy to transport. It’s got both a USB-A and USB-C port, and a headphone jack. An added bonus on the great display, which doubles as a touchscreen, is the automatic Dolby colour correction. But outside of work and basic entertainment, it struggles. The camera and microphone are lacklustre and it’s not quite powerful enough for high-end gaming.

Kindle Scribe
The biggest Kindle yet isn’t just about books as you can take notes on it, too! It’s got a nice, flat design, and is easy to hold. It comes with a pen that is held onto the side by magnets. Now it’s still a e-Reader first and foremost, and the 10.2” display is great to read on. It’s very crisp, with a long battery life. But you can also open a notebook and write with the pen, or put sticky notes on book pages. Very handy when doing research or homework. It’s a shame there aren’t more drawing tools, however.
