It’s been a long time since we saw a Kirby title in the racing genre. A spiritual successor to hit 2003 GameCube game Kirby’s Air Ride, this game plays a little differently to other racers. You auto-accelerate in Kirby’s Air Ride, with victory more about how you drift, glide through the air and – most importantly – maintain your momentum.
Be it on land, water or air tracks, you can use Kirby’s signature suction ability to get attacking items and buffs while racing. As well as a range of characters to choose from, you will have to put plenty of thought into the best kart for your style, with each having different stats, playstyles and special moves. As you go, you’ll unlock customisation options like decals and skins, as well as alternative machines.
Multiplayer is also a stand-out feature, with 8-player local wireless, and 4-player splitscreen. Plus, there’s a 16-player City Trial mode. This chaotic, genre-blending experience has you racing around a city collecting items and upgrades, before competing in a randomised final battle. Super fun.
